There are companies out there that have been operating for 100+ years, 200+ years, even longer, so what’s the big deal about a company that sells EHS management software, ESG management software, quality management software and risk management software turning 30?

I’ll tell you, and it’s two things: The pairing of EHS management, ESG management, quality management and risk management with the word “software,” and the fact that we are in it for the long haul and are even more excited about our future than we are about our storied past.

Think back 30-40 years. There weren’t any software companies serving the practice of EHSQ. There weren’t ISO management standards. People weren’t really talking about safety culture … Read more...

Frontline Workers Say They Are ‘Seen but not Heard’

A new research report finds that operations, safety & health and wellbeing are what are most important to employees, though they don’t feel comfortable weighing in.
Operations, safety and health and wellbeing are deemed the most important topics within an organization for most frontline workers.

A new research report finds that operations, safety & health and wellbeing are what are most important to employees, though they don’t feel comfortable weighing in.

The majority of American, Australian and British frontline workers (67%) say that they are never, rarely or only sometimes listened to on topics that matter to them the most—operations (54%), safety (46%) and health/wellbeing (49%)—according to new research by SafetyCulture. In fact, 66% of American frontline workers said they are rarely, never or only sometimes listened to by management on these important topics.

SafetyCulture’s new Feedback from the Field research report features the views of American, British and Australian frontline workers, defined as individuals who must “physically show up to their job.” These workers include those in the hospitality, retail, manufacturing … Read more...

The ‘Great Resignation’ Part One: What Steps Is Your Organization Taking to Retain and Entice Employees?

Recognizing the strain resignations are placing on their workers and ability to produce goods, many organizations are addressing employee turnover proactively.
What if your organization experienced as much as 50 percent employee turnover this year? What if that number was 70 percent or higher? As an EHS or quality professional, that would be a nightmare and these days, not an impossible scenario.

If you’ve read our new e-Book, “The ROI of Safety: Making the Business Case for Safety and Health,” you’ll know—if you didn’t already—that the actual hard costs of injuries are but a drop in the bucket when it comes to the combined total of hard and soft costs related to serious workplace injuries and fatalities. Recruiting, onboarding, training, retraining, production slowdowns, disrupted supply chain schedules and more can double or even triple the actual medical cost of an injury.

The same is true of the “Great Resignation.” We’ve all heard that many employees did not return to their jobs when pandemic-related layoffs ended. These workers decided … Read more...

The Global Supply Chain is Under Pressure: People, Not Tools, Can Save It

Labor shortages in the global supply chain are cuasing shortages of fuel and food.
During the pandemic, global supply chains have kept food, vaccines and consumer goods moving. Now, the cracks are starting to show as labor shortages lead to food and fuel crises.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, people gave little thought to the workings of the global supply chain. In the world of Amazon and Google, most of us have become accustomed to getting everyday items—from groceries to luxury devices—delivered to our front door simply by engaging a few buttons on our cell phones. While the pandemic might have had a marginal impact on some of the things we were able to obtain, many of us have lived our lockdown lives without any significant disruption to our consumption of material goods.

However, recent events might suggest that all is not well with the global supply chain. The International Chamber of Shipping has published an open letter to world governments and the World Health Organization (WHO) advocating … Read more...

COVID-19 Delta Variant: 42% of Workers Are Worried about Returning to the Workplace

Due to the Delta variant of COVID-19, more workers than ever are concerned about returning to work.

As the Delta variant continues to proliferate and workers head into the Labor Day weekend, 42 percent say they are worried about returning to the workplace for fear of contracting COVID-19. This marks a substantial jump from June 2021, when only 24 percent had that concern.

“With headlines about the rise of the Delta variant, breakthrough cases among the vaccinated, and an overburdened healthcare system in much of the country, COVID-19 concerns that were subsiding just two months ago have risen,” said Rebecca Ray, PhD, Executive Vice President of Human Capital at The Conference Board, a think tank.

Conducted in August by The Conference Board, the new survey captured the thoughts of more than 2,400 U.S. workers on topics including return-to-work anxiety, factors driving them to pursue new job opportunities, opinions about … Read more...

Quality Professionals Need to Address the Serious Threat of the Delta Surge for the Normal Office Return

The biggest threat in underestimating the Delta surge comes from the normalcy bias. This dangerous judgment error leads us to underestimate the likelihood and impact of disruptive events.

With the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus surging and vaccine effectiveness against it dropping to 39% after 6 months, quality professionals need to help their organizations recognize that we are not yet ready for a safe return to the office. Make no mistake about the danger: the Delta surge is forecast to grow much worse in the next few months. Indeed, the CDC is asking vaccinated people to wear masks and moving toward recommending booster shots.

Yet many large companies and mid-size firms, along with the federal government, are still planning to bring employees back to the office, despite the fact that those employees successfully worked from home during the height of the pandemic by using cloud-based technology that facilitates remote work. Over a third have already returned, and most of the rest are slated to return by the end of summer or early-mid autumn, when the schools will reopen and Delta … Read more...

The Human Tragedy of the Cost of Poor Quality

From vaccine production errors to technology failures during a season of dangerous forest fires, quality management is frequently a factor that determines whether first responders can help people in need using reliable, resilient equipment and resources.

The world is full of regular reminders that risk is hiding everywhere and that failure to follow quality principles can produce errors that aggregate into disasters. From vaccine production errors to technology failures during a season of dangerous forest fires, quality management is frequently a factor that determines whether first responders can help people in need using reliable, resilient equipment and resources.

When we think about the cost of poor quality (COPQ), we usually think about things like rework, brand damage, lost sales opportunities or lost customer loyalty. Sometimes, however, the cost is much more severe. In some cases, a grieving family is left to mourn the loss of a loved one, while the … Read more...
