Health & Safety is a Team Effort: Industry 4.0 and IIoT

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Industry 4.0 are forcing companies to rethink their approach to health and safety. Digital transformation uses innovative IoT endpoints and their data to improve the company’s core business, but they make health and safety more complex than ever. When properly deployed and integrated, sensors, endpoints and devices improve the individual safety of workers and identify additional areas for process improvement.

More connected workers, more devices, more data — this massive influx of information and capability requires an end-to-end solution that addresses new and evolving EHS challenges. A solution that can capture the data produced from edge devices, analyze it and organize it in meaningful ways to improve health and safety programs and processes. Intelex Technologies and Honeywell are working together to create an integrated EHS solution that solves the challenges posed by Industry 4.0 and IIoT.

The Number of Connected “Things”

The global IIoT market will grow to $310 billion USD by 2023, and some of that growth will be from the increase in the number of “Connected Workers.” This means that the average industrial worker is going to be wearing and carrying multiple devices to help them do their job. Deployment, management and training … Read more...

Biomimicry Looks to Natural History for Innovation

Innovation is usually discussed with only the future in mind, but a keynote speaker at the National Association of Environmental Managers (NAEM) Forum in Louisville, Ky. believes the key to meaningful environmental progress lies in our natural past.

Janine Benyus, co-founder of the Biomimicry Institute, presented an audience of 700 professionals from over 300 companies with the concept of Biomimicry: an approach to innovation that seeks to emulate nature’s time-tested patterns and strategies to find sustainable solutions to human challenges. The goal is to create products, processes and policies — new ways of living — that are well-adapted to life on Earth over the long haul.

Benyus – a biologist, author of numerous books, innovation consultant and self-proclaimed “nature nerd” –  said Biomimicry is a way of looking back at 3.8 billion years of good ideas in nature to allow us to leapfrog ahead without having to go through … Read more...

Notes from the National Safety Congress

By Sandy Smith

The Houston Astros may have missed out on the World Series, but the city is bustling with activity at the start of the National Safety Congress.

Streets were shut down around the National Safety Congress (NSC) at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston in preparation of a campaign visit from President Donald Trump. But that didn’t stop as many as 14,000 attendees from making their way to the Congress & Expo. (No word yet on whether the president plans to join us to learn more about occupational safety and health!)

Seeing Hazards Clearly

In her opening remarks at the NSC, Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council, talked about learning to see hazards clearly. “Safety professionals aren’t born, they are trained. And it takes training to see hazards clearly,” said Hersman. “Before I got my glasses, my definition of normal … Read more...

NSC Reflections – Safety Stakeholders

nsc-blogLast week, I was fortunate to attend the National Safety Council Conference as a member of the Intelex contingent. This year, the NSC was hosted in Anaheim California, right around the corner from Disneyland.  Truth be told, it was a nice break from the onset of the Canadian fall weather. The event was well run and was host to over 10,000 attendees looking for ways to move their organizations’ safety programs forward.

The expo was home to over 1,000 exhibitors that represented an incredibly diverse range of health and safety solution providers. Every corner of the expo floor showcased innovations from advancements in fire proof materials to new types of shock absorption, and other forms of personal protective equipment (PPE). One theme expressly present across these innovations was a focus on the primary stakeholder in any safety program – the worker at risk. Vendors showcased new ways to shield workers … Read more...
