OSHA Releases Guidance About Preparing the Workplace for the Threat of COVID-19

OSHA urges employers to take measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the workplace.

OSHA has released a guidance about best practices for COVID-19 and the workplace. The “Guidance for Preparing Workplaces for COVID-19” planning guidance is based on traditional infection prevention and industrial hygiene practices. It focuses on the need for employers to implement engineering, administrative, and work practice controls and personal protective equipment (PPE).

For employers who have already planned for influenza pandemics, planning for COVID-19 may involve updating plans. These plans could address the specific exposure risks, sources of exposure, routes of transmission, and other unique characteristics of SARS-CoV-2.

Injuries to Retail Employees on the Rise for the First Time in 15 Years

The latest statistics showing an increase in illnesses and injuries among retail workers is a sobering reminder to retailers to protect their workers during the busy holiday shopping season.

For the first time since 2012, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is reporting that in its latest estimates, nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses show no decline year-over-year and retail incidents involving injuries or illnesses increased for the first time since 2003. The retail trade accounted for 14 percent of all injuries and illnesses in the private sector in 2018 and is the only sector where the total number of recordable cases increased. In fact, the retail sector had more total recordable cases (TRC) than the mining, construction or manufacturing sectors.

BLS reported on Nov. 7 that there were 2.8 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses reported by private industry employers in 2018, unchanged from 2017. These data are estimates … Read more...

Define Systems of Record to Boost Performance

Quality depends on data because effective decision making depends on data. As a result, successful business and process outcomes will depend on building a culture of quality around data. This includes creating and following management processes to make data accessible, available, and accurate.

One strategy for improving process quality through data is to identify master data and decide which system of record will hold each type of master data. This is similar to knowing who the experts are in your company, knowing how to find them when you need them, and getting assurance that they will provide you with accurate, up-to-date information. In the previous blog on the Voice of the Customer (VoC), we looked at stated needs, which are the most obvious way in which the customer conveys their needs regarding products and services. In this blog, we’ll look at implied needs, which are the needs the customer does not articulate because they consider them too obvious to mention. For example, customers won’t articulate that they need a washing machine to clean clothes, but they assume that it will. When implied needs become subtle, it can be easy to miss significant opportunities to meet customer requirements.
