In this day and age, you don’t have to be a scientist to understand the power of data. It is everywhere from our work environments to our personal lives. Let’s face it—how many of us would be willing to change our habits when it comes to our smart phones? That being the case, it should come as no surprise that data has found its rightful place in safety management as well.

In his article “BBS and Leadership Analytics: Using Your Big Data to Engage Your Team,” Chuck elaborates on how the data is captured: “Much of the safety data gathered by most organization[s] comes from some sort of safety audit or inspection. These processes are used to gather information on the effectiveness of their safety management systems. Companies also gather a lot of data from behavior-based safety (BBS) observations.” No matter how you look at it, the relevance and applicability of empirical data is glaringly obvious.

The Impact of Leadership Analytics in Safety Management Programs

As with any type of business, change requires buy-in from leadership. Developing an effective BBS process requires exactly that. As the starting point, Pettinger recommends that safety leaders leverage observation-based intelligence to examine the quality of observation data. This is to identify areas of improvement and provide “safety-related feedback to workers.” This will also give them insight into the levels of engagement of their employees, which is critical to create a strong culture of safety.

Given that there is so much to observe and document, any tool that could make this process easier to manage can be of great benefit. This can range from software solutions to even simpler tools.
