Top 10 OSHA Violations for 2015 Include Fall Protection, Hazard Communication

OSHA recently released the Top 10 most cited standards for their 2015 fiscal year. Making the always-anticipated announcement was Patrick Kapust, deputy director of OSHA’s Directorate of Enforcement Programs. As is now tradition, the announcement took place at the National Safety Council Congress & Expo, which this year was held in Atlanta, Georgia.

We saw very few changes in this year’s list when comparing it with last year’s list, with no movement in the top six OSHA violations on the list. The most cited OSHA violation was Fall Protection once again, but all top ten violations were repeat offenders and had all appeared on the 2014 list.

There was only one change in the order of citations and it was a small one, with the Ladders standard moving up the list from 8th place to 7th, trading places with the Electrical, Wiring Methods standard which was bumped from 7th to 8th.

This is Fall Protection’s fifth year in the top spot – it stole this infamous title from the Scaffolding standard in 2011. During the period of 2004-2010, the Scaffolding standard was the most cited.

For the period of Oct 1, 2014 to Sept 30, 2015, here are the preliminary stats on OSHA’s ten most frequent citations.

1.       Fall Protection (1926.501) – 6,721 violations.

2.       Hazard Communication (1910.1200) – 5,192 violations.

3.       Scaffolding (1926.451) – 4,295 violations.

4.       Respiratory Protection (1910.134) – 3,305 violations.

5.       Lockout/Tagout (1910.147) – 3,002 violations.

6.       Powered Industrial Trucks (1910.178) – 2,760 violations.

7.       Ladders (1926.1053) – 2,489 violations.

8.       Electrical – Wiring Methods (1910.305) – 2,404 violations.

9.       Machine Guarding (1910.212) – 2,295 violations.

10.   Electrical – General Requirements (1910.303) – 1,973 violations.
