White Paper – The Importance of Integrated Management

The topic of managing environment, quality, and safety business processes under a single management program has become a popular topic in 2008. More and more, organizations are recognizing the reciprocal relationship that each of these business areas has on the other. In a 2008 whitepaper entitled Gaining Competitive Advantage Through Environmental, Health, Safety, and Quality Programs the author uses the following example to illustrate this point:


"… changing a process or procedure in one area without considering the impact on all areas could improve performance where the change is made but actually harm performance in other areas. For instance, replacing a chemical sanitizer in the laundry processes at a hospital with a less-toxic organic alternative might win points in the environmental category, but if the alternative is less effective at sterilizing linens and a spike in infections results, then quality has been diminished"


Simply put, environment, quality, and safety business processes should never be addressed in isolation of one another.   1. I recently completed reading the integrated management white paper. I believe this paper did a nice job of outlining why companies need integrated management. I wish there would have been more data related the results of the company identified in the study. It is not clear to me how NRG improved or what they improved.

  2. The benefits that NRG received were focused on the ability to roll up their data. Being able to see this information at their finger tips quickly was seen as a huge benefit. They also used the Environmental Performance indicators as a leading indicator for compensation on a plant level. If employees didn’t fill out their forms, or if they were not managing their ENV impact properly, it would impact on their compensation. So, they were able to get a lot of people using the system quickly. During the initial pilot phase, they had other locations calling and asking to be included. That kind of user involvement shows this as a very successful implementation! I’d be happy to help provide any additional information if you like??
