The Top 5 tips for nailing the all-important phone interview

Intelex’s Professional Development Office (PDO) is excited to kick off a series of blogs every other Wednesday that highlight the Intelex hiring and onboarding processes, as well as trends in recruiting and learning and development.

Intelex has received a lot of attention recently. After being selected as a Greater Toronto Top Employer, a Great Place to Work (fifth in Canada), and a three-time recipient of the Deloitte Fast 500 Tech Companies honour, among all the other awards that have come our way in the last 12 months. We think it is important to help individuals who are very interested in the company, through the Intelex recruiting process, and that’s why we’ve launched this series of blog posts.

For this entry I would like to discuss The Phone Interview. Most candidates will be interviewed on the phone prior to being brought in for an in-person interview. The process is generally fairly short, usually no more than fifteen minutes.

Here’s our Top 5 tips for nailing the phone interview:

  1. Be Yourself: Our family-oriented corporate culture at Intelex is very central to who we are and what we do, and finding the right people for this environment is a critical part of the recruitment process. So the phone interview is a great opportunity to show us who you are. You know, putting a personality to the resume! While the interview could include some technical questions, in many cases it will feel just like a conversation. We want to get a sense of who you are so let your personality shine through.
  2. Think About Your Future: In addition to getting a sense of the types of roles you have had in the past, the recruitment team at Intelex is really trying to get a sense of what you want to do and where you want to be in the future. Before going on the call, lend some thought to your desired career path.
  3. Get Comfortable: The key to performing well on the phone has as much to do with your experience being in line with the role, as it is with how comfortable you are. If you are nervous, let us know. We want you to perform at your best.
  4. Do Your Research: I believe there is nothing more frustrating for a Recruiter when talking to a candidate, than to have them ask what company this role is for, or what the company does. This is information that is available on the internet, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Pintrest, Google+, et al. The Corporate Recruitment Office does its best to schedule phone interviews with time for candidates to prepare. It does not take long to look up some facts, to re-read the job description, have a preliminary understanding of the role. So be prepared!
  5. Ask Questions: As Recruiters we often get asked the same questions over and over; tell me about the corporate culture, where is the company heading, what do you like about working with Intelex. All great questions, and a lot of time information that is not readily available. We also love to have questions that challenge us to think!

In the PDO’s next blog we will talk about the importance of Onboarding! If you have any suggested topics you would like us to cover, write me or leave a comment below.

Thanks for making Intelex such a great place to work

Hello Everyone!

In case you haven’t heard yet, Intelex was selected as the fifth “Best Place to Work” in Canada last night by the “Great Place to Work Institute.” Check them out here.

This is yet another great award for Intelex and totally a result of our exceptional culture and the great people we have here. We placed 5th out of 50 medium companies that were ranked, and many hundreds more that applied.

We also were one of six companies in 100 that won a special “Camaraderie” award!

I want everyone in the organization to feel free to be very proud of this achievement. I can’t stress enough that it is all about our Intelexians and how each one works with their colleagues, shares ideas, creates an open and trusting environment, and cultivates a workplace that is a pleasure to come to everyday.

The award is printed today in the Globe and Mail (pictured).

So, congratulations everyone, and thank you for making Intelex such a great place to work!

Intelex named Canada’s 5th best place to work!

Wow! We’re kinda pumped. For starters, it’s been an amazing year for Intelex, award-wise. From being named one of Canada’s 50 Best companies, to being singled out as one of the best GTA employers on two exclusive lists in the Globe and Mail and Toronto Star, the accolades have just kept coming, and last night was no different.

The Great Place to Work Institute held its major 2012 Best Workplaces in Canada gala, and presented the 100 best organizations to work for in Canada, singling out 50 medium and 50 enterprise organizations. As announcers came around to counting down Canada’s top 10 organizations, we were on the edge of our seats! Then came the big moment as we were named Canada’s fifth best place to work!

On top of that, Intelex was handed an exclusive award for camaraderie, which only five other companies of the 100 winners received. So it was a great night, and we’re awfully proud to be among Canada’s Top 10 organizations, and to be recognized for our company-wide spirit of trust and friendship.

The Great Place to Work institute is in itself a great organization and boasts one of the most comprehensive and intense scoring methodologies.

We were just thrilled to be keeping company with some of Canada’s very best, including Google, which took home the number one spot in the Enterprise category. Go Intelex!

Intelex named one of Canada’s Top 50 Small and Medium employers!

What a year! Following a cascade of achievements in awards competitions, Intelex has just received a huge accolade. We’ve been named one of Canada’s 50 Best Small and Medium Employers! The competition, which pitted Intelex against hundreds of other small and medium employers across the country, was facilitated jointly by Queen’s School of Business and AON Hewitt. The results were recently featured in PROFIT magazine.

Everyone at Intelex is thrilled by this achievement, which is another feather in an increasingly packed cap! In the past few months alone, Intelex was included on:

These wins are a gratifying acknowledgment of our relentless focus on creating a progressive work environment that prioritizes the needs of our greatest asset – our people. Sound like an attractive work environment? You bet. And we’re hiring. Check out our careers page for postings and apply today.

Intelex named one of Toronto’s top employers…again!

The accolades just keep piling on. Only a week after being singled-out as one of Toronto’s top employers in the Globe and Mail, Intelex was ranked 15th out of 35 of the Greater Toronto Area’s best employers in yet another employment award competition, the results of which were published in the Toronto Star last week.

Organized by Queen’s School of Business and Aon Hewitt, the Best Employers in the GTA competition evaluated workplace culture, benefits, retention, and most importantly, employee engagement. According to contest coordinators, the results of this study were influenced heavily by a survey conducted to determine how employees actually feel about their employer.

“The real litmus test of whether or not an organization is a Best Employer lies with the employees themselves,” explained Neil Crawford, Aon Hewitt’s study leader. “This study goes beyond satisfaction (how much I like things here) and commitment (how much I want to be here) to measure engagement (how much I want to and actually contribute to improving our business results). Without a focus on engagement, it’s difficult for organizations to achieve sustainable success.”

This win follows two other notable accomplishments for Intelex, including being featured in The Globe and Mail’s list of the Greater Toronto Area’s Top Employers 2012 as well as Deloitte’s list of the 500 fastest growing technology companies in North America.

Intelex named one of Toronto’s top employers!

Only weeks after being included on Deloitte’s list of the 500 fastest technology growing companies in North America, Intelex has another accolade to shout about. Today we were included in The Globe and Mail’s list of the Greater Toronto Area’s Top Employers 2012!

That’s another great feather to add to our cap. The write-up in the Globe indicated we are 118 employees strong, but since that data was collected earlier this year, we have actually grown to over 150 employees! And as we continue our trend of impressive year-over-year growth, we’re poised to leave that number in the dust in 2012.

On that note, we’re hiring! If you live in or near the Toronto area, don’t miss the opportunity to land a great job at a great company.

Intelex lands Fast 500 hat-trick

Once again, Intelex has been included in Deloitte’s list of the 500 fastest growing technology companies in North America.

This is the third consecutive year Intelex has been included in this who’s who of established and up-and-coming technology companies across the continent. It is also a great way to cap off a record-breaking fiscal year where we achieved more than 50 per cent growth over 2010. That continues our nine-year spell of more than 40 per cent year-over-year growth.
