As set out by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, the ISO 14000 standard was developed to help an organization meet the goal of "sustainable development" and environmental friendliness, regardless of the organization or the country in which it operates.
Some of the benefits organizations can profit from include:
- Significant Marketing Advantage - Customers, investors and local communities recognize and appreciate organizations that make conscious efforts to operate within the best interest of all their stake holders.
- Conservation of Resources - Minimizing waste and operational inefficiencies can save your organization energy, man hours, cost of reprocessing, and other valuable resources.
- Continuous Improvement - Implementing the right Environmental Management System will help to support your organization and promote continual improvement as your organization grows.

With an ever-changing series of governmental regulations, environmental, quality and health and safety compliance can be a formidable task. Accordingly, the consequences of this task not being met can have catastrophic consequences. Thus, many organizations have looked inward to meet these challenges.
Internal auditing, or self-auditing, is a tool that is increasingly used to address this challenge. As the term "self-audit" indicates, compliance audits are performed by an organization's own personnel, or by an outside third-party retained on its behalf. Self auditing is consistent with the notion that good decisions are made based on sound information.
For more information about the benefits of self auditing, an EH&S checklist, as well as a how-to-guide, please view the Basics of EH&S Self-Auditing, by Fred N. Rubel, available on www.environmental-expert.com

Intelex's goal is to be your 'One-Stop-Shop' for all things Environmental, Safety, Quality and Business Performance Management. One major step towards this goal is the development of the iForms System. iForms enables Intelex and customers to build any type of module for integration with the Intelex System, ranging from Safety Incident Forms, to Air Quality Data Sheets to Customer Satisfaction Surveys.
Over the next year, Intelex will be introducing new features on our Intelex-Exchange.com portal that will begin to develop a market place for EQH&S and BPM applications. At first Intelex will post applications for download by clients, but as the Intelex-Exchange grows we will provide a forum for customers to also post and share best practices online. The idea of a collective effort to continually improve business performance is an exciting one for us, and we hope that you and your organization can be involved through use of the Intelex System and the Intelex-Exchange website.

Formalizing business procedures can often seem like a daunting task. From an organizational perspective, it can be difficult to know where to begin, as it can seem like there is an overwhelming number of details to include. The benefits, however, of creating well written procedures to document your business processes can go a long way to support the organization's efforts in meeting their goals.
Firstly, to show conformance to standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OSHAS 18001, it is necessary to show documentation of existence and effectiveness of your management system. The necessary documentation can be quite complex, ranging from job descriptions and policies to regulatory-specific records and training materials.
Secondly, having formalized procedures can be an important resource for employees when implementing new systems or training new employees. They can be a great tool to ensure all levels of the organization are on the same page and working as efficiently and effectively as possible to meet organizational goals.
So how can you write comprehensive procedures without doubling your work load? Good news! There is help! A free online study course is available that will provide you with all the necessary instruction to create valuable written procedures. The course topics include how to flowchart a process, the structure of a proper procedure, how to perform job and task analysis and much more! The course covers ISO 9001 specifically, as a documentation of the quality system is considered one of the more challenging tasks, but is applicable for writing many different procedures. Best of all, this course allows readers to progress at their own pace and convenience.

Not too long ago, corporations would engage in business practices with scant regard for social or environmental implications. Powerful multinationals operated with impunity and were only beholden to their shareholders. In recent years, the paradigm has shifted to one in which a type of corporate conscience has begun to emerge.
A principal driver for this change in direction has been greater consumer awareness. Increasingly, consumers are making well informed purchasing decisions and favouring products and services that meet high standards for fair trade, sustainability, and social responsibility. This increasing demand is spurring a voluntary reassessment of business goals and principles in boardrooms around the world.
The most forward-thinking companies are setting out to take advantage of cleaner, reusable sources of energy, produce less waste, and to deliver products and services that are environmentally sustainable before they are mandated by legislation to do so. Some companies are beginning to invest in environomental management software that track, monitor, and report on company-wide environmental data.
Intelex Technologies develops and deploys environmental management systems that enable companies to meet all EHS compliance requirements while addressing air quality management issues such as CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions enforced by the Kyoto Protocol.

Each day organizations are confronted with the responsibility of effectively handling, tracking, and disposing of hazardous waste materials such as chemicals, water, and old computer equipment. To manage these hazardous items according to corporate standards and government regulations, organizations need a comprehensive set of tools that will enable them to manage, track, and report on the various stages of hazardous waste management; including categorizing potential wastes, tracking generated waste, tracking waste treated on-site, and tracking waste shipments. The key is to find a system that enables users to collect this data quickly, while still meeting, and ideally exceeding, auditing requirements.
Since the types of waste, processes, and regulations required to responsibly manage hazardous waste vary widely from organization to organization, Intelex has designed an iForms Hazardous Waste Management solution that's fully configurable to meet the unique needs of each client. The Intelex Hazardous Waste Management Module really is a user-intuitive product in that it's designed to be a step-by-step process that collects only the data your business requires.

The iForms Platform is a web-based solution that enables organizations to configure tailored solutions to manage and report on their business performance. The system is innovative both in its design and its technology, in that it is the first product of its kind to provide an all-encompassing solution for managing business performance data. As a software system, it is a cutting edge example of how the latest web technologies can be used to drive continual organizational performance.
They've also been designed so that they can be seamlessly integrated with the Intelex Web-Based Platform -- a management solution that integrates environmental, health & safety, and quality management initiatives into a centralized performance management portal.
With the iForms software companies can build custom solutions such as spill and release reporting forms, inventory management forms, hazardous waste management forms, and audit checklists in a fraction of the time and cost that a traditional custom project would take.
Or clients can consult with the Intelex Client Services Team regarding exactly what type of solution they need. Client Services can then build a custom iForm and send it to the client; ready for import into their Intelex system. This new innovation not only reduces the time, cost and resources needed to make custom modules, it also ensures the highest level of security possible.

Producing boardroom quality reports is an essential element in today’s metrics-based business world.
To meet this need, Intelex has introduced Merge Template functionality. A feature that was designed on the theory that being able to pull information out of our system conveniently is just as important as being able to put it in efficiently.
With Intelex Merge Templates users can generate boardroom quality reports by merging data from selected Intelex Records into a preformatted MS Word document - allowing for an infinite number of high-quality reports to be created, customized and shared in a matter of minutes.
Existing Intelex Clients can download free merge templates from the Intelex-Exchange and upload them right to their Intelex System.
